A young Edmonton Oilers hopeful has made a big name for himself during the Oilers rookie camp, and he has done so against one of the team's most bitter rivals.

On Friday, Oilers prospect Connor Clattenburg made it clear that he had every intent of setting the tone against intrastate rivals the Calgary Flames.

"I just want to go in there and play hard and set the tone for everyone else," said Clattenburg prior to the game. "And they can feed off it."

Little did we realize at the time just how well Clattenburg would make good on his promise, with the 20 year old forward sending a clear message to both his own team as well as the Calgary Flames with not one but two fights in the same game.

In his first scrap Clattenburg would take on Flames prospect Axel Hurtig, a 20 year old defenseman who has both a height and weight advantage over Clattenburg.

Clattenburg continued to show no fear throughout the evening and would once again drop the gloves when he took on 18 year old Flames prospect Maceo Phillips who had an even greater size advantage over Clattenburg.

Clattenburg was drafted in the 5th round (160th overall) by the Oilers during the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and has not earned any real experience at the National Hockey League or American Hockey League levels, but that could very well change after putting himself on the map in such a remarkable fashion last night.

Clattenburg has appeared in a single AHL game for the Bakersfield Condors but most of his time last season was spent with the Flint Firebirds of the Ontario Hockey League where he had 16 goals and 19 assists for 35 points in 46 games. That represented a significant uptick in offensive production for Clattenburg, who also had a whopping 108 penalty minutes over that stretch, and it would now seem that he is determined to fight his way into the NHL, perhaps literally.

One thing is certain and that is that fans in Edmonton have quickly taken notice, and you can bet that the Oilers organization is also liking what they have seen from Clattenburg this early into rookie camp.
