If you are the Boston Bruins at this juncture in the season, you'll take goals however they come. However, this particular tally will probably have people talking for some time, as it resembles soccer more than hockey. Bruins power-forward Milan Lucic opened the scoring in Saturday afternoon's matchup against the New York Rangers by driving to the net early in the first period. Lucic attempts to knock the puck to himself by using his skate, but it takes a healthy carom and winds up in the net. The goal was initially called off after it became clear the puck went in off his skate. Upon further review, however, the officials deemed there was no distinct kicking motion, resulting in a good hockey goal. Here is the official ruling on the play from the league: At 1:41 of the first period in the Rangers/Bruins game, video review determined that the puck deflected off Milan Lucic's skate and into the net in a legal fashion. According to Rule 49.2 'A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking player's skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal.' Good goal Boston. The ruling from the league is clear on the subject, but as a hockey purist something about this play just irks me. You be the judge: [iframe id=""]
